New park on the block

JOBURG - A new park has been developed for the Joburg metro and is expected to be launched in the coming months.

The park located near the Mandela Bridge on the outskirts of the Joburg CBD boasts a soccer field, gym and a kaleidoscope of playground equipment.

The park was developed by Johannesburg Development Agency.

Johannesburg City Parks announced the new addition to its array of recreational facilities across the city on its Facebook page, but there was no definite indication of when the park will be opened to the public.

However, the public has already raised concerns about vandalism and crime once the park is opened.

Facebook users responding to the post by City Parks feared that the park would become a target for crime and vagrants like many other public spaces around Joburg.

“Just hope the metal thieves don’t target this. What’s the security like?” Rose Johnson asked.

Gloria Montsi said, “Hope it does not become a dagga smoking area where the kids will be afraid to play and hope it won’t be a park where the street beggars sleep as well, cause then your’ re even afraid to take out your’ re cellphone.”

City Parks has yet to respond to questions regarding any safety and security measures for the park once it is open.
