PARKTOWN – The National Children’s Theatre in Parktown is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

In the past 25 years the theatre has produced outstanding theatrical and educational programmes which have won numerous awards.

These accolades include three Naledi Awards, an IPRA Golden World Award for Excellence and a Life Vita Award for Joyce Levinsohn, a former artistic director at the theatre.

The CEO of the theatre Moira Kats, who comes from an academic background, said the theatre is providing education and training for children.

She added that the theatre provides bursaries to pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds to attend training classes and learn drama, dance and singing.

One of the recipients has gone on to a special dance school in Scotland, due to the training they received from the theatre.

The theatre is all-inclusive, and provides a platform for children from various backgrounds who have ambitions of pursuing a vast range of careers in theatre.

Children are also encouraged to be critical and write reviews after watching shows.

Kats added, “We teach them that there many aspects to life that are ignored.”

The theatre has 13 staff members who, according to Kats, were doing a “wonderful” job.

The 25th anniversary celebrations began with several productions, including The Revealers, an anti-bullying play which is based on a book by Doug Wilhelm. A stage performance of Freckleface Strawberry, The Musical, also with an underlying theme of bullying, will run from 9 June to 20 July.

Katz appealed to companies or individuals who may want to make monetary contributions to the theatre to contact them.
