Goethe to host events this month

Exciting events and film screenings coming up this month at the Goethe-Institute.

If events hosted in March are anything to go by, then art enthusiasts can look forward to another exciting month at the Goethe-Institut.

Simon Gush’s exhibition, Red continues this month after enjoying a packed opening night last month. The exhibition’s main premise is the political and social context behind the red Mercedes Benz given to Nelson Mandela by workers in East London in 1992. The exhibition will run until 16 May.

Young filmmakers can also look forward to a workshop presented by Antjie Ehrmann and Harun Farocki, entitled Labour in a Single Shot.

The workshop continues from the previous month and, according to Benjamin Keuffel of the Goethe-Institut, the works to be presented will draw on early 19th Century filmmaking methodology.

“By filming in one single continuous shot, the workshop will allow for different notions of work to be explored cinematographically,” he said.

The results of the workshop will be shown at The Bioscope on 12 and 13 April.

Keuffel added that film lovers can look forward to two more film screenings taking place this month.

The first film is the work of language students who will be showcasing their talent with the arthouse-style Grave Decisions. The film will be screened on 2 April.

The second film is the classic love story of Johann Goethe and Charlotte Buff, entitled Goethe, which will be screened on 24 April.

The book New South African Voices will be the subject of a book reading and discussion series which will host prominent Mozambican writer Mia Couto and South Africa’s well-known author, Mandla Langa.

The much-anticipated exhibition Nesting Narratives will open at GoetheonMain on 3 April. The exhibition explores artists’ responses to the Johannesburg City Library and its dual role as an active resource and cultural symbol for the city.
