Earth Hour: How do you Honour the Earth?

JOBURG – Saturday 29 March will mark another edition of the worldwide Earth Hour.

JOBURG – 29 March marks the importance of acknowledging and supporting the environment throughout the world by observing, the Worldwide Earth Hour.

This annual one-hour event, organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) encourages individuals, communities, households and businesses to switch off non-essential lights for at least an hour to show their commitment to preservation of the planet.

The movement began in Sydney, Australia in 2007 as a lights-off event, since then it has spread to over 7000 towns and cities across the international board.

The initiative has not been shy of criticism, in 2009 economist Ross McKitrick criticized the Earth Hour idea, “Abundant, cheap electricity has been the greatest source of human liberation in the 20th century. The whole mentality around Earth Hour demonizes electricity,” he remarked.

The City of Cape Town has been awarded the WWF’s Earth Hour City Challenge (EHCC) the title, Global Earth Hour Capital 2014. This is the recognition for the city’s ambition and pioneering actions in combating climate change, the previous winner was Vancouver, Canada.

Earth Hour is scheduled to run from 20h30 to 21h30 local time and the WWF has called on people to make individual promises to the planet by asking the question, “How do you honour the Earth?”
