Rodean set to wow at JAG before jetting off to Australia

The Rodean school's choir will be performing some of their best music before taking their choral music to Australia and Singapore.

Fusing traditional, afro-pop and contemporary music, the Rodean School choir is set to wow audiences at the Johannesburg Art Gallery. The concert which is free gives them an opportunity to perform their best songs for the last time before they jet off on their international tour in Australia.

According to Ralf Smit the director of the choir, the concert is result of the invitation from the gallery which wanted the school choir to perform there.

“As a school choir we were very honoured to receive the request from the gallery and we hope to impress with our music,” Smit said.

Smit said it will be the choir’s last performance before leaving for their international tour which will take them to Australia and Singapore for three weeks.

The choir director promised a great performance filled an exciting assortment of South African choral music for the audience.

He has been working with choirs for 15 years and explained that he opted to focus on working with schools and young people because of his belief in choral music as one of the best mediums of expression for young people.

“We try to get a nice mixture of music by incorporating different genres such as traditional, afro-pop and Afrikaans music and this makes learning new music fun for the girls,” he added.

Smit said the choir is looking forward to showcasing the best of South African music in different cities during their tour.

“The girls are excited about the tour and they can’t wait to share their music with other schools,” he said.

The choir will be performing at schools and cathedrals in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Smit is also involved with the Mzansi music choir based in Soweto, a youth choir he got involved with nine years ago.
