Let’s go to the bioscope

MABONENG PRECINCT - From thought-provoking social commentary to unexpected surprises to a celebration of foreign films, The Bioscope just keeps it coming.

Head down to Joburg’s favourite independent cinema for a visual feast over the next few weeks.

The 2013 Oscar-nominated documentary, How to survive a plague, will be screened from 29 until 31 March.

The film tells the story of two coalitions, ACT UP and TAG (Treatment Action Group), whose activism and innovation turned AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable condition.

With access to archival material from the 80s and 90s, filmmaker David France puts the viewer in the thick of controversial actions, heated meetings, heartbreaking failures and exultant breakthroughs.

A once-off screening of Four Corners will take place on 28 March at 7.30pm.

The film deals intimately with the issues of fatherhood and family in the 100-year-old war of South Africa’s “number gangs”, the 26s and the 28s.

This coming of age thriller shows how four people can find the strength to make a choice and to break out of the “four corners of the prison” that each person carries within.

From 4 until 6 April, rock and metal fans can enjoy special screenings of American metal band Lamb of God documentary, As the Palaces Burn, and March of the Gods: Botswana Metalheads.

As the Palaces Burn is a feature-length documentary that began as a chronicle of the band and its fans.

Things took an abrupt turn when lead singer Randy Blythe was arrested on charges of manslaughter following the death of a young Czech fan.

March of the Gods: Botswana Metalheads takes a look at the unexpected metal scene in the unlikely location of Botswana, with a focus on the band Wrust.

The film offers interviews with local bands, fans, musicians and people who offered anthropological insights into the metal subculture.

The screening will be courtesy of Flamedrop Productions’ annual film festival, X Fest.

From 24 until 27 April, the cinema will present a Colombian film showcase.

The first of its kind in South Africa, the showcase will include a number of productions that had outstanding track records for their quality and international scope.
