Pirates unstoppable

The Pirates Rugby Club, the Rats, recently moved into top gear as they won their first game of the season against Harlequins of Pretoria.

Despite the rain, wet fields and load shedding, Pirates managed a solid week of training which resulted in a clean sweep for the Greenside-based side against their Pretoria counterparts.

First team coach Gordon Peacock was happy with the result.

“We did pretty well in the heavy underfoot conditions and our attitude on defence was fantastic. They only scored a late try through their forwards,” said Peacock.

“We are hard at work for this week’s game against Tukkies which will be a strong indicator of where the club is.”

It was a great start to the season and one that the club needed to kick start their 2014 campaign.

Preparations have been going well at the club so far this season and the club has seen a number of new faces arrive, as well as fantastic numbers in the U19 and U21 teams.

This year has seen the highest number of boys competing in these age groups as compared to the past few years.

Brad Guymer, chairperson of Pirates Rugby said, “We have been working hard in the off season to create an environment where players have the right coaching and support on and off the field.”

“We still have a lot of work ahead of us to get to the levels we want to be at but we are getting there,” he added.

Pirates opening game against Harlequins has set the benchmark for the season and the club appears ready to work hard to maintain the standard.

Guymer encouraged the community to attend the forthcoming season games to support the club. Spokesperson of the Pirates Sports and Rugby Club Non Welsford said the club is a great place to be, with loads on offer for the whole family.

“Mom and dad can watch the Rats play, followed by a romantic evening watching Super Rugby on the big screen in the club house,” he said.
