Organisation donates wheelchair

PARKTOWN NORTH – Sweethearts, an outreach organization handed over a wheelchair to a woman who has one leg in Parktown North.

The organisation handed over a wheelchair to Margaret Mausne, who only has one leg and stands on the corner of Jan Smuts and 7th avenues in Parktown North. Sweethearts is a platform for ordinary South Africans to contribute towards, and uplift the lives, of less fortunate individuals in society.

Her brother, Gift, thanked the organisation on her behalf as she does not speak English. “I pray [that] you will be blessed… Thank you for the wheelchair,” he wrote.

Sweethearts collect bread tags and plastic bottle tops which are recycled through waste management company Interwaste in exchange for wheelchairs. Each wheelchair is exchanged for 150kg of bottle tops and 15kg of bread tags.

On Valentine’s Day last year, the organisation handed over their first wheelchair. “This day, which optimises the sharing of love, was the birth of the Sweethearts Foundation,” said the organisation’s Leigh Pearce.

The organisation appealed to anyone who may want to contribute to their initiative to contact them.

  1. The sweethearts would love use this opportunity to commend Isabella Katz and Jessie Katz for raising the awareness of Margaret’s plight.

These young ladies noticed Margaret only had one leg and made use of crutches to get around when they drove past her on the side of the road in Rosebank and they immediately knew she needed their help.

They then contacted their grandmother Deanna Novick, one of the founders of the sweethearts Foundation, asking her if she could give Margaret a chair as they knew their grandmother had already successfully helped a number of other people requiring wheelchairs.

Deanna, together with Alexa Novick, Michaela Dermeik and Jemma Sundelson went to see Margaret and asked her if she would like a wheelchair. Deanna had to first establish whether someone would be able to help Margaret, i.e. fold it, push her, get her into a taxi and assist her with all the needs of a person depending on a wheelchair. Margaret said her brother, Gift, would help her.

Certain forms have to be completed and certified in order to request a wheelchair from Interwaste. Deanna then arranged that Margaret and Gift provide all these documents.

About 10 days later and by appointment Deanna arranged to meet Margaret and Gift and handed over the wheelchair supplied from Interwaste.

Gift thanked us (the sweethearts) by sending us a prayer of thank you and photos of Margaret with her new wheelchair.

  2. Warm the World supplied the blanket. This orgnisation provide the Sweethearts with blankets for all receivers of wheelchairs.
