Crime hit yeoville

YEOVILLE – Serious crime incidents had clobbered Yeoville community recently with cases of rape and a man being shot in attempted highjack were reported to the police.

Incidents of serious crime have recently hit Yeoville with a case of rape and a shooting in an attempted hijacking.

A man was shot and wounded in an attempted hijacking in Highlands Street. The police said the driver of a Toyota Quantum was transporting passengers to work when they came across rocks blocking the road. One of the passengers climbed out to remove the rocks from the road. Yeoville police spokesperson Constable Thabo Malatji said, “Suddenly three men surfaced from the nearby bush and pointed a firearm at the driver. The driver was shot in the right arm, and he jumped out of the taxi leaving it to veer off the road and hit an embankment.”

The driver was taken to hospital for treatment. Malatji said a docket of attempted murder and attempted hijacking was registered and investigations were underway. No arrests have been made.

Malatji said a man was arrested for rape in Isipingo Street. He said the victim was walking to her residence when she was confronted by a man. Malatji said the suspect forced her down and raped her. He said the victim screamed and officers in a police patrol van heard her.

The suspect was arrested on the scene and was expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court facing charges of rape.
