On Saturday 29 March, an exhibition of mixed media will be opened at The Gallery on 6th in Parkhurst, with speaker Professor Kim Berman.

The three-person exhibition will feature artistic work by Gill Crawford – drawings, Lionel Murcott – drawings and paintings, and Bart Cox – ceramic sculptures.

Crawford (65) who also runs workplace e-learning and training institution, marks out strong black and white structures in her explorations of the figure. The charcoal pieces, in their big forms, tend towards the sculptural. Flesh is evoked from worked paper. “We’ve allowed our passion for art to completely absorb us,” she said.

Bart Cox (74) has worked with capacity building, job creation and HIV/Aids NGOs. His fired clay forms clench and reach, and carry the touch of informed hands, earthy and deeply human. They grew out of a lifetime in community work and involvement with people. “I like body shapes and to see them come out,” he said.

Lionel Murcott (66) was a teacher for 30 years. His work invokes driving energies, whether urgent or tender. His resonant and radiant colours often surprise as statements of flesh. Some of his stories have a fable behind them. “I’ve been painting since I retired from teaching, although I was painting even then,” he said.

The exhibition will be at The Gallery on 28 6th Street at 11.30am.
