Mandela foundation thanks Brazilian Football Confederation

HOUGHTON - The Nelson Mandela Foundation thanked the Brazilian Football Confederation (BFC) for their donation of an estimated R 2.1million of the income they received from a friendly match against Bafana Bafana.

THE Brazilian Football Confederation (BFC) recently donated an estimated R2.1 million to the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

The foundation thanked the BFC for their donation which was generated from income they received from a friendly match against Bafana Bafana.

The donation would go towards the foundation’s work in the promotion of social justice and democracy, both locally and internationally.

The foundation says that pride, passion and the tradition of sport is what connects all people as individuals, families, communities and nations. It granted permission to use the 46664 trademark, Mandela’s prison number, as a tribute on the players’ uniforms for the event.

Following the announcement, chairman of the foundation’s Resource Mobilisation Committee and member of soccer governing body Fifa, Tokyo Sexwale expressed his sincere gratitude for the donation.

“We wish Brazil well as it takes over the baton of leadership from South Africa to host the 2014 Fifa World Cup,” said Sexwale.

He also acknowledged the regular sporting supporters of the foundation, including the UK-based Sunderland AFC, for their continued financial contributions towards the foundation’s core work in continuing Tata’s legacy, and said that further contributions from other sporting organisations would be made known as they arose.

Bafana was uncomfortably demolished 5-0 by Brazil in the recent match at FNB stadium. Neymar scored a hat-trick, Fernandinho and Oscar scored a single goal each, beating rookie goalkeeper Ronwen Williams who made his international debut.

After the game, a young boy invaded the pitch, and concerned marshals and officials tried to corral the lad to escort him off the field.

However, Neymar intervened, and the young invader was hoisted in the air by the Brazilian team before they snapped photos with him.
