Debatable candidates on ANC’s election list

JOBURG - The ANC’s National Assembly candidate list includes disgraced and previously axed ministers, and senior party officials facing hefty fraud charges.

Sacked minister of communication Dina Pule – listed as number 70 on the ruling party’s candidate submission – was publicly reprimanded, fined and forced to apologise by Parliament for her role in the Information Communication Technology Indaba scandal.

A report by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela implicated Pule in the scandal involving the misuse of state resources and found her guilty of “unlawful, unethical and improper conduct”.

Madonsela found Pule had unlawfully extended her spousal benefits to her boyfriend, Phosane Mngqibisa.

Further, Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini, who was found guilty of misusing R254 000 in irregular service benefits and mileage claims, was included as number eight on the list. Dlamini was sentenced to a fine of R120 000 or five years’ imprisonment.

Number 37 on the list was Tina Joemat-Pettersson, who was found guilty of maladministration, and improper and unethical conduct in the irregular awarding of a tender to manage the government’s fisheries vessels.

The agriculture, forestry and fisheries minister was implicated in the unlawful awarding of the R800 million vessel contract to Sekunjalo.

Humphrey Mmemezi, listed number 111, was fired as Gauteng MEC for Local Government and Housing for misusing his government-issued credit card.

He used the credit card to purchase groceries for his relatives and family, and clothing for himself. He also spent R2 950 at Augusta Spur in

Umhlanga Ridge.

Also on the list were ANC Youth League leaders, Andile Lungisa and Pule Mabe. Both face charges of corruption.
