A new approach to teaching

Torah Academy Nursery School has introduced an Italian educational methodology of teaching, the Reggio Emilia Approach.

This after the school’s principal Sara Bronstein attended two international conferences. The Reggio Emilia Approach is an educational philosophy focused on preschool and primary education where children are taught the principles of respect, responsibility, and community through exploration and discovery. This is done in a supportive and enriching environment based on the interests of the children through a self-guided curriculum.

One of the teachers, Chana Rivka Lewin is implementing the programme. She said this educational approach drew out creativity in the child, promoted confidence and inquiring minds, dealt with problem solving, taking the initiative and making choices.

“The child is at the centre of the curriculum and is encouraged in his or her endeavours by being treated with respect and determining what he or she is going to learn,” said Lewin.

“We make a lesson out of ordinary objects – mirrors, objects on the table, anything from nature and educate each child according to his or her individual way.”
