Dismal attendance at Agang manifesto launch

After a failed merger with the DA and reports of financial difficulty, Agang SA launched their election manifesto in Atteridgeville, Pretoria.

Despite a dismal attendance with only a few hundred people showing up, leader of the party, Dr Mamphela Ramphele remained upbeat about the party’s prospects.

The covered stadium which can accommodate up to 3 000 people was not even half full, and this raised questions about what impact the failed merger with the DA had on the party’s membership. However, Ramphele claimed they had deliberately invited a limited number of people to the event.

The manifesto centred around five cornerstones – empowerment, education, entrepreneurship, employment and effective government.

While the ANC and DA have made it a point to centre their election campaign around job creation, Mamphela said Agang would not try to create even a single job. She said political parties who were promising to create millions of jobs were “dreaming”.

In the unlikely event that Agang was to come into power, Ramphele said her party would create a favourable environment for job creation. This would be done, “through empowering citizens with excellent education, providing skills and training, and creating opportunities for young people”.

“Watch this space,” she said.

After allegedly reneging on her deal with Helen Zille to appear on the ballot paper as the DA’s presidential candidate, the DA accused Ramphele of being a leader who is “not to be trusted”.
