Armed robbers steal officer’s gun

YEOVILLE - A police officer was robbed of his service firearm while on duty in the Observatory.

According to police, the officers were stationed at a house in Eckstein Street.

Yeoville police spokesperson Constable Thabo Malatji said, “Suddenly the police were confronted by men who forced the gate open armed with rifles and handguns.”

Malatji said the officer put up a struggle when they tried to disarm him, but he was overpowered.

“They took the police officer’s service firearm and tried to break into the main house,” he said.

Malatji said the other police officer called for backup and the suspects fled the scene. He added that no shots were fired and no injuries reported.

A case of armed robbery and housebreaking had been registered by the Yeoville police but no arrests have yet been made.
