Eskom calling on bright sparks
JOBURG - Eskom is inviting resourceful designers to enter this year's energy efficient lighting design competition. Contestants are encouraged to come up with an original lamp design that is functional, efficient and aesthetically appealing.
The aim of the competition is to give new and established designers the opportunity to showcase their creativity and also gain recognition for their designs.
Eskom has recognised energy efficiency as a strategic priority and is using the competition as a way to encourage the development of new designs that will demonstrate efficient lighting technologies. The theme for this year’s competition is Celebrate 20 years of democracy and the closing date is 14 August.
Prizes to be won include money for first and second place and Lenovo tablets for six finalists.
The competition offers a two-fold opportunity:
- Eskom is inviting high school pupils, university students and professional designers to think out of the box and submit imaginative lamp designs that not only work, but that are also pleasing to the eye. As the name of the competition implies, it is of major importance that all designs make use of energy-efficient light sources.
- Professional designers are also invited to submit innovative energy-efficient designs, systems or products that are suitable for residential applications. These may include, for example, a complete lighting system that caters for a low-cost housing development. Once again, the key word is energy-efficiency.
