StrEat adds fresh spin to outdoor eating

JOBURG - There's a new fast-food supplier of fresh and healthy meals that suits get-up-and-go lifestyles.

StrEat Cuisine, a food truck that may soon be a regular feature in Rosebank and Sandton, hopes to make eating take-outs fresh, healthy and just as quick as traditional fast-food outlets.

Residents and those working in the area are offered an alternative kind of fast food – food that is freshly made on the day.

StrEat Cuisine travels through different precincts on a daily basis, and goes to Rosebank and Sandton once a week. However, due to problems encountered with Rosebank and Sandton business owners, they have not been able to establish a specific day.

The food truck was started by Laura-Beth Eicker-Harris and Daniel Basch in September last year and was welcomed concept by quite a few people.

“We decided to start a food truck and not a restaurant because we have a passion for food and we wanted a way to serve it and still be mobile, as this allows us to be where people are,” Basch explained.

Not only is the food fresh, the packaging is environmentally-friendly. The truck offers customers food sourced from the local market with a different meal every day, adding to the choices available to customers.

The formula of incorporating fast food and mobility seems to be working, with Basch saying that they travel to different areas around the city and to a few festivals.

Basch said that in Sandton and Rosebank, despite having the necessary paperwork, they are continually hassled and are refused the opportunity to trade freely like any other business in the area.

“We would love to be able to do regular business in Rosebank and Sandton, but we are seen as competition and the precinct does not see the value of having food trucks in the area,” he said.

Despite these challenges, Basch has high hopes for the business, even roping in Niel Louw and Tiron Eloff, contestants from MasterChef South Africa season two. Basch hopes that bringing in the former contenders will enhance the variety of food available.

Basch wants to see the business grow and for the precincts to be more accepting.
