Residents’ association elects new committee

GREENSIDE - The Greenside Residents Association held its annual general meeting at Pirates Bowling Club on 19 February.

A small crowd of residents trickled in at 7pm and the venue filled up with new and old faces.

The outgoing president of the association’s executive members, Victor Voorendyk, welcomed those in attendance and presented the successes of the former board but also highlighted the challenges faced by the association as a whole.

Voorendyk stressed that people were not completely aware of what the purpose of the body was and what the responsibility of the executive was to the members.

“The purpose of the association is to facilitate the projects residents would like to see happen within the community,” explained Voorendyk.

He said that the association had five projects in the past year that he felt were successful, including a petition requesting the Metro police to enforce bylaws in the area.

However, he admitted that communication between the executive body and its members, as well as between the association and the rest of the community, could have been better.

“Effective communication is a core challenge but it’s a challenge that can be addressed by the incoming executive members,” he said.

Voorendyk encouraged more residents to get involved and for them to recruit members to join the association.

“Right now we have resource constraints – by this I mean that we do not have enough people volunteering their skills within the association,” he added.

“We need to encourage participation and encourage the community to share their views.”

Ward 87 councillor Amanda Forsythe congratulated the outgoing executive and emphasised that the community needed a group of strong individuals to take over.

The newly-elected Greenside Residents Association committee includes:

  •  Anthony Jossel
  •  Beth Hackland
  •  Carol Millard
  •  Hadey Motani
  •  Jane Eagle
