New director for Wits sexual harassment office

BRAAMFONTEIN - The University of the Witwatersrand has taken a further step in the fight against sexual harassment by hiring Professor Jackie Dugard as the new director of Wits’ Sexual Harassment Office.

The appointment follows multiple scandals that rocked the university last year of sexual harassment cases against lecturers.

Dugard will be in charge of assessing current structures to deal with sexual harassment on the university’s campuses and adapting those structures to ensure that they are in line with the university’s new approved policies and procedures.

Professor Adam Habib, the vice-chancellor of the university, praised the appointment saying that the university is confident that Professor Dugard will bring with her the necessary skills, experience and leadership qualities necessary to develop the structures needed for the university.

“The university welcomes her to Wits in this new role and we look forward to working with her to establish a system that will ensure that the rights and dignity of our staff and students are never again violated,” he added.

Dugard’s appointment to the post was effective from 1 February.
