Critical Mass rides again

BRAAMFONTEIN - Mass bicycle ride, Critical Mass Joburg, will take place again on February's last Friday.

The free, unsupported and unmarshalled event will see cyclists ride through the central business district.

According to the Critical Mass Joburg website, it was founded by James Happe, Loic Bellet and several others in 2007.

In 2011, Louise Denysschen, Melvin Neale and Shaun van der Burgt “reignited” Critical Mass Joburg.

The idea was to bring people back into the city and raise awareness about the viability of cycling as a form of transport in and around Joburg.

The route will take cyclists through Braamfontein, Fordsburg, Newtown, Marshalltown, Maboneng Precinct, Troyeville, Ellis Park, Joubert Park and Hillbrow.

“Traditionally the Critical Mass movement is about an unofficial, unsanctioned rally on all forms of self-propelled wheeled transport that brings into focus things like safety, car-free social time on city streets, and re-using the inner city’s facilities for social interaction,” states the website.

Critical Mass Joburg will take place on 28 February, and will begin at the corner of De Beer and Juta streets, Braamfontein, at 7.15pm.
