DA’s Maimane addresses Houghton residents

“The best thing we can do is argue for change and ensure that opportunities are for everyone and not a select few.”

These were the words of Mmusi Maimane, Premier candidate for Gauteng, during an impassioned plea to voters ahead of the 2014 general elections.

Houghton residents were treated to a night with the national spokesperson of the DA and got to listen to what he and the party have in store for the province.

The address took place at the Killarney Golf Club and saw Maimane engage with residents on some of the party’s plans to effect “change” in Gauteng.

In his address, Maimane tackled a few issues, including unemployment. “South Africans need jobs that restore their dignity and that will be able to sustain them,” he said.

He also mentioned the need to build a strong and resilient economy that can ensure that more South Africans get employed instead of less, much to the agreement and applause of the crowd.

The DA spokesperson, dubbed “charismatic” by the party’s supporters, also talked about the need to put an end to police brutality. He cited examples of recent protests to criticise the state of the police force and encourage “South Africans to stand on the side of injustice”.

He also spoke about corruption, fixing the education system and the controversial issue of e-tolls.

After the address, he took questions from the audience before having a meet-and-greet with residents.
