City council plans UJ/Wits cycle route

JOBURG - Movement around a popular city area will be made easier with the construction of a 15km bicyle route and sidewalks.

The UJ/Wits route will initially take shape around UJ’s Auckland Park campus.

According to Lisa Seftel, executive director of the city council’s transport department, the route will link the campus, residential areas for students, Melville and surrounding areas.

“The route will be designed in accordance with the city council’s Complete Street guidelines,” she said.

“Issues like greening, storm water management, lighting, accommodation of people with special needs like the aged and people with disabilities, will be taken into account.”

Phase one of the project will see the route begun at Ripley Road and continue along University Road, Richmond Avenue, Dixton Avenue, Hanley Avenue, Artillery Road, Bunting Road, 5th Street, 8th Street, Solomon Road, Showground Road, Juta Close, and Smit Street.

The route will end at Park Station.

“The second phase of the project will continue from the completion of phase one to Bok Street, Beit Street, and will end at Ellis Park Stadium,” said Seftel.

The project will include landscaping, earthworks, sidewalks, cycle lanes, civil services such as sewers and water, bicycle racks, lighting, CCTV cameras, and street furniture such as benches, refuse bins, bollards and signage.

Seftel said she hoped phase one would be completed by June.
