First birthday for red city tour buses

JOBURG - The operators of the now-familiar red double-decker tour buses in the CBD have cause for celebration this February.

The month marks City Sightseeing Johannesburg & Soweto’s first year of operation, during which the operators achieved several milestones.

According to brand manager Carmen Lerm, first among these was the ongoing successful operation of the Red City Tour, which visits 11 stops in and around the CBD, and the introduction of the popular Soweto tour.

The latter visits some of Soweto’s cutural and historical riches.

Other highlights included being awarded a place in the Gauteng Signature Collection at the inaugural Lilizela Tourism Awards, and increasing the onboard language commentary from 10 to 16 languages including a fun channel for children.

In celebration, the operators will run several special offers.

The Kids Special will allow two children under the age of 18 to travel for free with any paying adult on Saturdays and during school holidays.

Pensioners over the age of 60 qualify for half-price tickets from Monday to Friday.

“These special pensioner’s tickets cannot be combined with any other specials, and you must show your SA bar-coded ID books to qualify,” said Lerm.

The operators also launched the Sunday Sizzler Special, where tickets for Sunday Red City Tours are discounted if purchased online.

The Red City Tour operates on a hop-on, hop-off basis, which allows sightseers to disembark at any of the designated stops and then get back on a later bus.

“Sightseers can also choose to stay on the bus for the full circular route, meaning that in just two hours, you can experience the best of Johannesburg, accompanied by the onboard commentary,” said Lerm.

Stops on the tour include Gandhi Square, the James Hall Transport Museum, Gold Reef City, the SAB World of Beer, Origins Centre, Braamfontein and Constitution Hill.
