Police seize knife during school drug search

JOBURG - Sandringham police conducted a surprise drug and weapon search at Sandringham High School, where a knife was found.

One pupil was found in possession of a knife which he claimed was for self-defence, but no drugs nor other weapons were found during the search. The knife was seized and will remain in the custody of police.

Drug searches are common in high schools as police believe the use of drugs at schools contributes to crime levels, with dagga being the drug of choice among pupils.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said they would continue conducting surprise drug and weapon searches at various schools.

Principal at the school Paul Mmethi said this was a continuity of a relationship with the police to ensure the school remained a safe environment. He added that he was pleased that no drugs were found in the school. “This means we are a drug-free school,” he said.

Maphakela appealed to parents and community members to warn pupils about the danger of drug use and weapons. He said police would continue to fight for a drug and weapon-free society.
