Cats need homes too

PARKWOOD - The Kitty Shelter in Parkwood is usually inundated with cats looking for good homes.

The shelter, which homes 30 to 40 adult cats and 30 kittens at any one time, has close to 150 cats and kittens overall and not nearly enough people looking to adopt them.

According to owner Merien Smidt, pet owners are more inclined to adopt dogs and the shelter would like more people to consider also taking in a cat.

“We sometimes do get people who come and adopt kittens and in some cases, once the cat grows up, they’ll end up back here,” she explained.

“We treat our cats like ‘divas’ and our main goal is to find them good homes so our intention is not to just give them away, but instead to find them responsible and loving owners.”

Cat lover Miriam Isa just adopted two kittens from the shelter.

This came after her cat of 13-years died from cancer. She wasn’t looking to replace her companion, she explained, but rather to give other cats a loving home.

“Yes, I also find that many people prefer to have dogs as pets but having a cat as a pet is just as equally rewarding,” she said.

“Dogs are also loveable pets, however, the one difference between the pets is that dogs need a lot of attention from the owner while cats will instead give a lot of attention to their owner.”

Isa said she chose to adopt from The Kitty Shelter as she knew that the cats were well-looked after and carefully ‘vetted’ [taken to the vet] before being put up for adoption.
