Police investigate murder of elderly man

HOUGHTON - Police are investigating the murder of an elderly man who was shot dead in his Houghton home on 13 January.

Police spokesperson Constable Thabo Malatji said police received a call about the incident, which occurred at the corner of Central and 6th streets.

Malajti said, “When police arrived at the scene, they found the body of a 76-year-old man who had been shot dead.” It is alleged that two male suspects entered the premises and held the gardener and domestic worker at gunpoint.

The suspects allegedly forced the gardener and domestic worker into the house. According to Malajti, when the owner asked what was happening, one of the suspects shot him once in the stomach. Both suspects then fled.

The suspects allegedly fired two more shots as they were leaving the premises. Malatji added that nothing was taken from the house and the motive for the murder was still unknown.

A murder docket has been opened and is being investigated by the Norwood police.
