Pantless riders hit Park Station

JOBURG - Some Joburg commuters nonchalantly stripped to their undies to take part in the annual international “No trousers subway ride” at Park Station on 12 January.

It seemed like a pretty normal Sunday afternoon until one brave Ryan Sin came strolling down platform five – his headphones on and his pants off.

Other pranksters soon followed suit and stripped down to their delicates in front of unsuspecting train commuters.

Metrorail commuters waiting for the train to Braamfontein were surprised to see people standing around with their legs and buttocks exposed for all to see.

First-time Metrorail commuter Frances Frylinck was seen sporting a white vintage pair of underwear embellished with green frills as she casually waited to catch the train.

“This will be my first time actually using the metro train. I feel that this ‘no pants’ ride may shine some light on public transport and perhaps dispel the stigma surrounding safety on public transport,” she said.

“As well, I thought this would be a fun thing to do with my friend on his birthday.”

Ying-Poi De Lacy also took part in the ‘celebration of silliness’ and said she did it purely for the fun of it.

Keeping a straight face about it, Luckyboy Mkhodwane waited for the train in his pair of blue and grey boxer briefs.

“I’m doing this really just for the sake of having fun. I’ve heard about it happening since 2002 and I’ve always said that I would one day take part in the event,” he commented.

Other cities, including Durban, were slated to strip off their pants on public transport.

The pantless mission received a few laughs, some uncomfortable looks, and most importantly the attention the participants had anticipated.
