Big party for Joburg orphans

MARLBORO - The City of Johannesburg has thrown a lavish party for the orphans in the city.

More than 1 000 orphaned children from around Johannesburg celebrated former president Nelson Mandela’s life on Thursday.

This celebration at the Malboro stadium was also a party for the children.

Wandile Zwane head of the department of social development of the City of Johannesburg said they hosted this children’s event every year. He said what made it special this year was that it was also dedicated to Mandela who died on December 5.

“This is every child’s birthday,” he said. “We have orphans, street kids and children from child-headed households. The idea is to honour these children and make them feel special.”

A very happy Nhlanhla Ndaba (9) said he had fun on the day. “His (Mandela) death has left me sad and heartbroken. He was a man who had a lot of love, especially for children,” the grade five pupil said.
