Old Eds suffer big setback

Dreams of again going to the Champion of Champions were shattered for the Old Eds Premier league cricketers when they found themselves in second place after enduring a heavy defeat at the hands of Pirates on 1 December.

Having lost two wickets in the first five overs set Old Eds back, but the two schoolboys Grant Roelofsen and Yaseen Valli put on 60 for the third wicket.

While Roelofsen went out for 40, Valli found a willing partner in overseas player Charlie Vickery, as they put on 80 for the fifth wicket before Vickery fell for 39.

At 162/4 off 40 overs, the stage was set for a final 10 over flourish, but the all too often collapse combined with poor shot making as well as some excellent “death bowling” by Pirates, saw Old Eds crumble to 198.

Valli was the only shining light as he batted for a well-constructed 77.

A small total is defendable, providing the bowlers bowl with discipline.

However, this was not the case for Old Eds as too many bad balls coming from their side saw the Pirates assault made easier than it should have been.

They failed to recover from that initial onslaught, and Jarred Barnes was the only bowler to take a wicket as Pirates, now in cruise control, were home with plenty to spare and they collected a bonus point.

The game was not in favour of Old Eds but they have set their sights on trying to retain the Time competition title which starts on 19 January 2014.
