Police find rounds of ammo in Hillbrow flat

HILLBROW - A sting operation by the police led to the arrest of two suspects in connection with an attempted murder and possession illegal firearms and ammunition.

Police spokesperson Constable Mduduzi Zondo said detectives raided an apartment located near the intersection of Caroline and Banket streets, Hillbrow. This followed an investigation relating to a case of attempted murder in November this year.

Zondo said, “A 30-year-old suspect was found in his flat, in bed with his girlfriend, and he was apprehended.” According to police the suspect was questioned about the firearm he allegedly used to shoot his victim.

The suspect led the police to another flat in the same street where they found a 35-year-old man. Zondo said, “After a thorough search police found three unlicensed firearms hidden in a laptop bag and several rounds of ammunition,” said Zondo. He added that the firearms’ serial numbers had been filed off and police believed the two were friends.

Zondo said the second suspect was in possession of a 45 magnum revolver with four rounds of ammunition, an M83 sportman gun with four rounds of ammunition, and a 9mm pistol with seven rounds of ammunition. “An additional 54 rounds of ammunition were found at the scene,” added Zondo.

The two suspects were arrested and charged with attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, respectively. They are expected to appear at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
