Free Con Hill tours for children

BRAAMFONTEIN - IN honour of National Children's Day and Universal Children's Day on 2 and 20 November, Constitution Hill flung open its doors to welcome in the little ones.

Children under the age of 12 can tour the heritage site and explore our nation’s remarkable transition from apartheid to today’s democracy at no cost in November and December.

“We believe in the future of our children. We also believe that they are our future leaders, and for them to be capable in this role, they need to understand our past,” said Constitution Hill CEO Petal Thring.

“Like our former president Nelson Mandela once said, ‘Our children are our greatest treasure. They are our future. Those who abuse them tear at the fabric of our society and weaken our nation’.”

South Africa is on the brink of celebrating 20 years of democracy and demonstrating the miracle of reconciliation through one of the world’s most comprehensive constitutions.

“We grapple with challenges pertaining to issues of patriotism, understanding the constitution, identity and active citizenship. Children are especially relevant in the light of the growing need to develop constitutional values and responsible citizens,” said Thring.

The award-winning heritage site is the home of the Constitutional Court as well as an open museum on the site of the Old Fort prison complex, where thousands of ordinary South Africans and anti-apartheid South Africans such as Nelson Mandela, Robert Sobukwe and Mohandas Gandhi were once imprisoned.

Hourly tours take place every day of the week.
