Feeding hungry children

ALEXANDRA - Vodacom has embarked on a feeding scheme that is designed to feed children even during school holidays.

Carter Primary School pupils were filled with gratitude after they received a generous food donation from Vodacom.

This was part of the company’s Food Security Programme which was started in July. Each child received a bucket which contained peanut butter, pilchards, baked beans and other food.

Suraya Hamdulay, executive head of sustainability and corporate citizenship at Vodacom said, “We looked at a platform to do something good. We wanted to start at the beginning of the school holidays. A lot of kids only receive food at school, which is one meal.”

The project, which is a partnership between Vodacom and the Department of Basic Education, will see a total of 24 000 food parcels being distributed to schools in Alexandra, KwaZulu-Natal and Nelspruit. Through this project, Vodacom hopes that the distribution of food parcels to schools will supplement families with basic food to cover periods when children are not at school and benefiting from daily in-school feeding programmes. Carter was one of 13 Alex schools to receive this donation.

School principal Siva Naicker said the outreach was most welcome. “The community deserves this. It makes a big difference in the lives of the families receiving the food today,” he said.
