Family still seeking justice after dog’s death

JOBURG - A devastated Rembrand Park family is still seeking justice after their dog was allegedly shot by a police officer at their home.

On week ending 27 October North Eastern Tribune reported about a family that was left devastated after their dog, named Duke, was shot dead.

The dog’s owner, Mukesh Goburdhun, said police were responding to an attempted burglary incident at his home. “The police entered the property after we called them and the dog became restless; my 14-year-old son tried to calm him down,” he said.

A police officer who, according to Goburdhun had a trainee badge, allegedly shot the dog with a rifle. Goburdhun claimed the policeman had fired “within less than a metre” of his son and 16-year-old daughter. He added the policeman claimed to have shot the dog in self-defence.

Goburdhun said he spoke to a police officer who was handling the case, in which the policeman is allegedly being investigated for animal cruelty. “Apparently the dockets are still with him, he has not sent them to the prosecutor as yet,” he said.

The devastated dog owner said he was worried about the pace at which the investigation was moving. “Who knows, maybe the docket will go missing very soon,” he said.
