Challenge proves successful for organisation

Roots & Shoots South Africa was happy to announce that it raised R2 483 after a group of cyclists rode for their cause in the recent 94.7 Momentum Cycle Challenge.

Roots & Shoots is the humanitarian and environmental youth outreach programme of the Jane Goodall Institute.

Roots & Shoots national manager, Juliet Price said it was the organisation’s first time taking part in the race, but they were looking to make it an annual event.

The programme and the cycle team received funding and sponsorship from Wakaberry Killarney.

The Killarney-based retailer not only kitted the team out, but also mobilised the community and children from the Houghton-based Rodean School to take part in raising funds for the programme.

“It is always good to get local businesses sponsoring initiatives such as this one, and working with the children from Rodean School was a lot of fun,” said Price.

Co-owner of the ice-cream establishment, Chrystal Dancey said not only was the aim to give back to the community but it was also an opportunity to get children to participate in charity work.

“For every frozen yogurt bought by the children, 10 percent of the takings were donated to Roots & Shoots,” said Dancey.

She added that the children came in their numbers, and even brought family members to show their support.

The winning class was invited to Wakaberry and spoilt with a bowl of ice-cream on November 29.

Some of the cyclists who rode for Roots & Shoots included teachers from Rodean School and their spouses.
