A rather Seussical sensation

Orange Grove resident Emma Rogers (11) is starring in the show Seussical Jr at the National Children’s Theatre in Parktown.

The Fairways Primary School pupil plays Jojo, a character she describes as “very interesting and a big thinker”, and, she says, “The other boys make fun of him for that.”

Rogers added she enjoyed playing Jojo as the character had some similarities to herself.

The story centres around Horton the elephant as he finds himself having to protect his tiny friend, JoJo the Who, and all the other Whos of Whoville, along with the task of caring for an abandoned egg left by the irresponsible Mayzie LaBird while she takes a vacation. Hunters capture Horton and the egg and take them to a travelling circus.

“Although Jojo is smart, he does not read much like me,” said the Grade 5 pupil. She reads a lot of books, which are “mostly fantasy and adventure”. She said it was tricky deciding what her favourite read was, as she had read all the Harry Potter books and is now focusing on Percy Jackson.

Rogers joined the theatre workshops in 2011 and has done four productions prior to this one. She studies piano and modern dancing. She also plays in the cricket and soccer teams and is a member of the swimming team and the choir. Rogers said she would like to take acting further by studying musical theatre once she gets to university.

The production runs until December 22.
