Give bowls a bash

GREENSIDE - If you've ever wished for a sport played at a leisurely pace, bowls might be just the ticket for you.

Pirates Bowls Club, with its two highly-rated bowling greens, will welcome new and fully-fledged bowlers among its ranks.

The club runs coaching sessions for new bowlers on Saturday mornings.

“All bowlers, women and men, are more than welcome to come down to the club on Saturdays and join the members for a social game, as long as there are no league games being played,” said the club’s Non Welsford.

The club has nurtured young bowlers from nearby Greenside High School by subsidising their membership fees and coaching them to play bowls.

“These boys have done the club proud. Noah Mabula, in particular, has continued to play great bowls. He was selected for more than one Gauteng representative side and won a couple of titles. He skipped our one league team, and generally acquitted himself superbly,” she said.

In addition to being a well-loved bowling venue, the club’s deck and greens are often used for corporate events and small social occasions, although the use of the greens is subject to league and competition commitments.

The club is at 4 Cruden Bay Road, approximately 500m from the Pirates Rugby Club.
