Cosatu march underway
JOHANNESBURG - Cosatu's march against e-tolling, labour brokers and the Youth Wage Subsidy has commenced in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.
UPDATE – 14 November, 11.30am:
Thousands of Cosatu members and its affiliates from around Gauteng are proceeding to Department of Labour in De Korte Street to hand over a memorandum calling for the scrapping of Labour Brokers, among other employment issues.
The march will then proceed to the Department of Transport, the premier’s office, SA Chamber of Mines and Johannesburg Police Station to hand over memorandums.
Roads that will be affected include, Rissik, Simmonds, Bree, Jeppe, President and Albertina Sisulu.
13 November, 5pm:
Cosatu is set to march to hand over memoranda to Gauteng’s Premier, the legislature, transport department, the South African Chamber of Mines and the Hawks.
Members will gather at Cosatu’s head office in Braamfontein at 8.30am on 14 November.
Spokesperson Dumisani Dakile said the mass action was a protected and legal one and it would happen in two other provinces, namely Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
They will leave at 10.30am to deliver the first memorandum to the labour department in De Korte Street in Braamfontein.
From there, the marchers are expected to deliver memoranda to the provincial transport department, the office of the MEC for Transport, the Gauteng Legislature and the Gauteng Premier’s office.
The march will proceed to the Chamber of Mines, and lastly to the Johannesburg Central Police Station.
“Firstly, it will be a request to the Auditor-General to conduct a proper investigation in relation to e-tolling. Secondly, we’ll also be opening a corruption case: we have requested the Hawks to come and receive the memorandum to do a criminal investigation on the e-tolls.”
He said the trade union was aware that prices were inflated in the construction of the 2010 World Cup stadiums and the Gauteng Freeways, adding that a number of companies had confessed doing so to the competition commission.
Dakile further announced motorists’ pleas for another drive slow to take place on a Saturday, in order to allow other motorists to participate.
