Calling on youth for leadership programme

GAUTENG - Applications for the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s 2014 Youth Leadership Programme has opened.

There’s an opportunity for the youth to join a leadership programme.

If you are between 15 and 25 years of age, live in Gauteng and want to enhance your leadership skills, you should consider applying for the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s 2014 Youth Leadership Programme.

“We are looking for youth who want to be change agents in their community, who want to have a solid understanding of their history, and who have the vision of a non-racial South Africa. This is a year-long programme, requiring people to meet fortnightly,” explained the foundation’s youth co-ordinator, Busisiwe Nkosi.

“The programme will be limited to 100 participants only. We introduced the programme last year and it was highly successful. Our group visited a number of sites including Robben Island, the Gauteng Legislature and Liliesleaf Farm. We engaged in thought-provoking current debates, and met a number of struggle icons,”she said.

“The Youth Leadership Programme is about developing future leaders who can contribute to making South Africa a better place through youth activism and projects. Through this programme, young people will learn skills that will equip them for leadership roles [such as] speaking, writing, debating and campaigning, amongst others.

“We hope that the young people who go through this programme will go on to be activists and leaders who will continue to work at making South Africa a more non-racial, equal and democratic country.”

Nkosi added that the foundation hopes to reach out to a wider, more diverse youth base for its 2014 programme, and noted that applications have already been coming in.

Applications will be screened, and those selected will be called in for an interview early next year. This process is to ensure that individuals who are committed to the programme, are chosen.

Nkosi advised that the course is in intense and will require tasks to be completed before attending some of the debates and excursions. Entries close on 2 December.
