Walk on the wild side at Melville Koppies

MELVILLE – Nature lovers have a selection of guided walks and tours to choose from at Melville Koppies in November.

The last conserved remnant of the city’s ridges as they were before the discovery of gold in 1886 make up this heritage site.

On 2 November, a 90-minute hike with socialised dogs will take place on Melville Koppies West at 8am.

Friends of Melville Koppies’ Wendy Carstens said the walk was not recommended for puppies or unfit dogs, and that dogs would need to be on leads.

“Please wear proper shoes as the paths are steep and rocky in parts, and please bring water for your dogs,” she said.

On 3 November, a three-hour guided tour will take place at Melville Koppies Central at 3pm.

“Guides stop at frequent intervals to introduce the group to the flora, fauna, geology, archaeology, ecology and history of the koppies. The veld will take on new dimensions for the hikers,” said Carstens.

Guided tours will also take place on 10 November at 8.30am, and on 17 November at 3pm.

On 24 November, a three-hour cross-koppie hike will take place at 8.30am. Carstens recommended hikers bring a snack and water.

“This hike is not suitable for unfit people or children under the age of six — unless you can carry them for three hours,” said Carstens.

Dogs may not be taken on the guided tours or cross-koppie hikes.
