Taxi drivers must stop ‘bullying’
JOHANNESBURG - MMC for Transport in Johannesburg Christine Walters has pleaded with taxi drivers to refrain from ‘bullying’ other motorists on the road.
She was speaking to taxi operators at a road safety campaign at Faraday Taxi Rank in Johannesburg.
“You (taxi operators) are currently seen as bullies on the road, this has to change so that you’re not seen that way anymore,” she told operators.
Walters said the city council took road safety very seriously and she hoped the city council with the help of the taxi industry, could assist in improving road safety for operators and commuters.
“The current statistics on road fatalities in our country are shocking,” she said.
“Every day families lose loved ones due to road accidents. People ignore the rules of the road; not wearing seatbelts, talking and texting on their cellphones while driving, not keeping to the speed limit, and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs are just a few of the things that rob families of their children, mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers,” she added.
