PARKTOWN – Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex and his wife, Sophie, The Countess of Wessex, congratulated more than 100 young people for achieving the Gold Level of the prestigious President’s Award.

The award is known internationally as The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Young people under the age of 25 set goals for themselves in the fields of physical activities, skills, community service and a wilderness adventure.

This year, 18 girls at Roedean School achieved their gold. The highlights of the award for them included serving at Roedean’s Phedisang community project in Mpumalanga and completing hikes in Magoebaskloof

and the Wolkberg, as well as an expedition on the Orange River.

Seventeen Grade 11 pupils went on a six-day residential project with Roedean’s community partner Phedisang, an organisation that contributes to the basic care of orphans and vulnerable children by providing food, monitoring health, and facilitating access to government funding and health care.

The Roedean pupils, alongside the Phedisang team, painted educational murals, aided with computer training, assisted with gardening, and helped with meal preparation and serving.
