Lightning delays road resurfacing

JOBURG – The resurfacing of a section of Jan Smuts Avenue was delayed when a lightning strike damaged Johannesburg Roads Agency’s asphalt plant.

The agency said an alternative asphalt supplier would ensure the work would resume, subject to weather conditions.

The Jan Smuts Avenue resurfacing marked the launch of the city council’s R2 billion road resurfacing project,

launched by Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau.
Roads agency managing director Skhumbuzo Macozoma said all agency projects dependent on asphalt were halted to allow for repairs to the damaged plant. The repair is expected to be completed by 30 October.

Macozoma apologised for any inconvenience caused by the work stoppage, and urged motorists to use other roads in the vicinity while Jan Smuts Avenue was resurfaced.

“The agency is determined to ensure Johannesburg’s road infrastructure is improved to facilitate safe and rapid mobility,” he said.

Road users were asked to remain alert where repair work was being done, and to report theft and vandalism of road assets to Metro police and road defects to the city’s call centre.
