Mayor launches road resurfacing programme

The City of Johannesburg has allocated R2 billion towards the rebuilding and resurfacing of roads in the city.

This was announced by Mayor Parks Tau at the launch of the Road Resurfacing Programme in Rosebank. The programme has the objective of improving road infrastructure, traffic lights and traffic congestion.

Tau said, “This strategy is part of a comprehensive programme that will deal with other challenges such as providing good quality road infrastructure, conducting traffic regulation through traffic signals, potholes, road signs and ensuring the rapid and safe drainage of storm water.”

The M1, M2 highways and major roads that serve commercial hubs such as Rosebank and Sandton will be major beneficiaries of this upgrade over the next three years. More than 60 roads and streets will be upgraded and 435km of road surface improved.

There had been concerns about the Ace Parking in Parkhurst and surrounding areas. Tau said, “We have set aside time to visit the surrounding areas in this neighbourhood sometime this month to come and talk about the Ace Parking, and also touch on the work that is already being done on the Complete Street project.”

Tau said through the Complete Street project, the city council would address the challenges relating to road usage with the objective to “balance road use by making provision for pedestrian, traffic and cycle lanes on the mayor arteries, including the highways”.

He said the Johannesburg Roads Agency would undertake the rehabilitation of the roads. The construction of the project has already begun on Jan Smuts Avenue in Rosebank. Tau said the roads have to be accessible and comfortable for all road users, including cyclists and pedestrians.

Tau said the roads project formed part of a comprehensive investment in infrastructure of more than R110 over the next 10 years.
