Craigpark bowls club resolution on cards

CRAIGPARK – The concerns about the Craighall Park Bowling Club may soon be a thing of the past, as the Johannesburg Property Company is in the process of trying to resolve the matter in court.

Ward councillor Gordon Mackay said he had received reports over several months about alleged irregular activities taking place at the club (Bowling club concerns, week ending 20 September).

Mackay said he had been told people had taken up residence in the club, and that it had been suspected prostitution and the illegal sale of alcohol was taking place. The councillor requested the property company investigate these allegations in February.

The Johannesburg Bowls Association also had concerns about the club. President Anselm McLean said the club no longer had a bowls team and was no longer a bowls club.

Property company spokesperson Zaheera Walker said meetings with the people concerned had taken place, and that the company had the issue “under control”.

“The matter is still sub judice, and once it has been finalised a more detailed report will be made available to the media,” she said.

The Craigpark Residents Association October newsletter stated, “After months of negotiations with the property company, it looks as if we finally have a resolution, and the Johannesburg Bowls Association will take over the lease. The residents association hopes the club will become a community-focused centre.”
