IEC launch 2014 National and Provincial elections

JOBURG - South Africans have been urged to go and register for next years National and Provincial elections on 9 and 10 November.

All voting stations would be open from 8am to 5pm.

The date for elections would be announced in due course.

Chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission, Advocate Pansy Tlakula announced the dates at the launch of the 2014 elections at Midrand’s Gallagher convention centre on 9 October.

The elections will mark the country 20 years of democracy since the first elections in 1994.

“There’s no better way to celebrate this milestone, than to ensure that every South African is able to register and vote in the coming elections,” said Tlakula.

Tlakula said the commission was determined to attain a record number of voters for the elections. She said they were also prepared for an acceptionally high voter turn-out, adding that everyone had a role to play, in encouraging unregistered citizens to register.

Tlakula said voter registration would also be extended to South Africans outside based in other countries.

Chief Electoral chairperson Mosotho Moepya said voting stations for the upcoming elections were increased by 9.4 percent. He said the smart card IDs were successfully tested for use on scanners and would be accepted for registration and voting purposes.

“Our website has been upgraded to a format that is form-friendly and therefore accessible from mobile phones, tablets and conventional desktops.”

The current voter registration in Gauteng currently stands at 69 percent against a target of 80 percent.

The percentage of youth between the ages of 18 and 19 stands at 8.4 percent. Those between 20 and 29 are at 49.4 percent and the percentage of people between 30 and 80 are over 85 percent.

Registered citizens have been urged to check their registration status’ by either sending an sms to 32810 with their I’d number, call the commission tollfree line or visit the website at www.elections.org.za.
