Summit to address road carnage

A TWO-DAY National Road Safety Summit to address the carnage on the roads is underway Birchwood Conference Centre in Boksburg.

The event is hosted by Minister of Transport Dipuo Peters and attended by her deputy Sindisiwe Chikunga, MECs responsible for roads, transport, community safety and liaison, CEOs of transport state-owned companies, chiefs of traffic management and law enforcement, municipalities and institutions of higher learning.

The theme is Together Championing Road Safety 365 days. This is an inclusive call to all road users and stakeholders to contribute towards ensuring a reduction in road deaths, a decrease in crashes, a change in road user behaviour, voluntary compliance to road traffic rules by road users and making road safety part of everyday life in the country.

Also being discussed is legislative amendments aimed at improving road safety through adopting the traffic law enforcement code, addressing road infrastructure and endorsing behaviour that promotes safety through administrative justice.
