Kingsmead College turns 80

Kingsmead College will turn 80 on 10 October and has planned a celebratory birthday party on 12 October.

The party will include a commemorative walk to the Zoo Lake and back to the school.

On 30 September the girls from the college participated in a legacy walk around the school where they reflected on the girls who have gone before them and they looked to their own futures and considered what legacy they would like to leave behind them.

They also collected and donated hundreds of teddy bears for needy children.

The college was established on 10 October 1933 and its founder was Doris Vera Thompson.

From the very beginning the aim for the school was to learn to contribute to a happy society.

Thompson’s aim was to send out considerate, disciplined efficient women to play their parts in the world and to play them worthily.

The school today looks nothing like the school of 1933. There are up-to-date computer centres; there are splendid sports fields; there is a wonderful music centre.

Junior school buildings have been upgraded; the senior school boasts an impressive learning and research centre; and resources are the most up-to-date.

Still at the forefront of educational methodology, the college is also at the forefront of the technology revolution of this new generation.

The school began as a school at the forefront of education and it remains a school at the forefront of education.
