Suburbs to celebrate centenary

KILLARNEY - Residents of Killarney and Riviera will celebrate 100 years of the suburbs' existence on 28 September at the Killarney Park in 4th Street.

The event, organised by the New Killarney-Riviera Association, would coincide with the celebration of Heritage Month.

Association chairperson Wayne Ford encouraged residents to join in on the day for a few hours. He said, “It’s not every day that a suburb celebrates a centenary, and a little bit of community spirit always makes for a better neighbourhood.”

The formal proceedings would start with the unveiling of a heritage plaque at the intersection of 2nd Avenue and 5th Street to mark the site where the Transvaal Automobile Club once stood.

Pam Golding Properties Hyde Park has donated an indigenous wild peach tree, which would be planted in the park by the community.

Residents would embark on a short heritage walking tour and visit the landmark buildings of Gleneagles, Mentone Court and Daventry Court.

There would be braais available and residents are encouraged to bring picnic baskets and meat. Another highlight will be the centenary muffin baking competition, where anyone is welcome to bring their baked goodies to sell to the public and compete for the prize for the best muffins.

There would also be a pet competition.
