Children have fun at The Secret Garden

PARKTOWN - Children who have watched the play called The Secret Garden at the National Children's Theatre in Parktown found it to be enchanting.

The heart-warming classic of children’s literature is adapted and directed by Francois Theron and has been scheduled to take place until 6 October.

The production has received a grant of R3 million from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.

Its story unfolds around Mary Lennox, a young English girl orphaned in India, who is sent to England to the home of her mysterious and sorrowful uncle, after her parents died from a cholera epidemic. She is a sickly, bad tempered little girl who loves no one and whom no one loves.

Her uncle is not much good as an uncle or indeed as a father. He neglects his sickly son whom he expects to die. He has been in a state of inconsolable grief since his wife died 10 years ago. In his grief he locks the door to the garden his wife loved, and hides the key.

Mary meets the gardener Ben and his apprentice Dickon who understands the language of birds, animals and flowers. She discovers The Secret Garden and with their help coaxes it back to life – roses bloom again, daffodils burst through the earth and tall white lilies reach for the sky. Something wonderful and magical begins to touch the lives of all that enter the garden.

The production days are Mondays to Saturdays during government school term and Tuesdays to Sundays during school holidays
