First Scouts invested

ALEXANDRA - September 18 will live long in the memories of the members of the newly-registered 2nd Alexandra Scout Troop.

Lehlohonolo Lebuya and Thabo Phala were the first Scouts to be formally invested into the Troop, and at the same time presented with the “stripes” that designated them as Patrol Leaders.

Many more will follow in their footsteps, but they will forever be the first. The 2nd Alexandra Troop started a few months ago when Khanyi Dzova came to Alexandra from Matatiele in the Eastern Cape where he completed his schooling.

He was a member of the Scout Troop there and on arrival in Alex started talking to the young boys and girls of the area about Scouts and Scouting.

Soon there was so much interest that he started making the gatherings more formal and then came the idea to form a new Troop, approaches were made to Scout District Headquarters and the rest, as the saying goes, is history.

It is very interesting to note that the way in which Khanyi brought the 2nd Alexandra Troop into being was very much along the lines adopted by Lord Robert Baden-Powell, Founder of the now world-wide organisation, when he started Scouting as far back as 1907.

“I am both proud and honoured to be part of this memorable occasion”, said Don Norris, District Commissioner for Gauteng Northern District, of which Alexandra is a part, ” because it shows to the public something that we within the organisation know so well – Scouting is growing very niocely and not dying, as so many have suggested in the past. This Troop is a shining example both to the community and to the nation.” More Troops are in the pipeline and there is still plenty of room for more in the future.
